Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has backed defender Trent Alexander-Arnold go on to beat his number of appearances for the Reds.

Alexander-Arnold has begun to establish himself as a first team regular this season.

Carragher has told the Liverpool Echo he believes the full-back can better him.

He said: “Trent is going to be a Liverpool player for a long time.

I honestly think he could end up making more appearances for the club than I did.”

Carragher made 508 appearances for Liverpool in total, so that is a big task ahead for the young defender.

Time is on his side, with Alexander-Arnold just 19-years-old.

Carragher made his debut when he was 19, so Alexander-Arnold is a little ahead of him, having already racked up a season’s worth of appearances.

Alexander-Arnold must stay injury free and will have to battle with his own form and seeing off various challengers through the years ahead.

The comments from Carragher sound ambitious, but Alexander-Arnold has shown enough so far to make it sound like a credible suggestion.
