Jerry Mbakogu has moved a step closer to signing with Leeds United.

Mbakogu’s January move to Leeds hit a hitch because he would not qualify for a work permit, and the Nigerian sought to take steps to acquire an Italian passport ahead of this summer.

His current club Carpi announced today that Mbakogu has been successful.

He is now an Italian citizen and will not need a work permit to move to England.

This removes a key obstacle from Leeds’ path in their attempts to sign the Serie B striker.

Mabkogu has an important month ahead as he bids to prove to Leeds that he is deserving of a summer move.

He has been injured since February with a knee injury but newspaper Gazzetta Di Modena reported this week he is back fit again for the final five games of Carpi’s season.

Italian outlet Gazzamercato reported in February that Leeds have a provisional agreement with Carpi for Mbakogu.
