The former West Bromwich Albion midfielder was once captained by Pearson – the ex-Leicester City and Derby County boss.

Nigel Pearson (L) watches from the stands during the Premier League match between Everton and Manchester City at Goodison Park on January 15, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

Carlton Palmer believes the West Bromwich Albion job is “a great fit” for former Leicester City and Derby County manager Nigel Pearson.

Pearson – who was assistant to Bryan Robson at the Hawthorns – is currently managing in Belgium’s second tier with Leicester affiliates OH Leuven.

Speaking to Proper Sport on Monday, however, Palmer suggested his one-time Sheffield Wednesday captain is ready to return to the English game.

Nigel Pearson, manager of Derby County looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Derby County and Blackburn Rovers at iPro Stadium on September 24, 2016 in Derby, England.

“For me, I think it’s a great fit for Nigel Pearson,” said the former West Brom midfielder in episode eight of It is what it is. “He’s been there before, he’s got a team out of that league before. Nigel needs to rebuild his CV, I think he allowed the Leicester situation to get to him. I know that personally, because I’ve spoken to him on numerous occasions, he was bitter about what happened at Leicester.

“I think he’s over that now – I think his stint at Derby you didn’t really see the best of Nigel Pearson. The fact that he’s now working for a subsidiary of Leicester in Belgium suggests that he’s over that now.

“For me, I would look at somebody like Nigel who can come back with something to prove. The players love playing for him, he is a good leader and I think he’s a great fit for West Brom, because I think they have got the money, they have got good players and I think they can mount a serious challenge to get back next year at the first attempt.”

Ipswich Town Manager Mick McCarthy looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Ipswich Town and Reading at Portman Road on December 16, 2017 in Ipswich, England.

Pearson is currently 10/1 for the Albion job with Sky Bet, behind the departing Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy (2/1), past-and-present Leicester pair Craig Shakespeare (4/1) and Michael Appleton (5/1), and Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes (7/1) – all three of whom have Baggies connections.

And it is not only Palmer who would like to see him take charge at The Hawthorns, after Kevin Campbell’s comments a fortnight ago.

Bottom club West Brom – who parted company with Alan Pardew a week ago – are ten points adrift of safety with only five games remaining.
