Carlton Palmer has taunted Portsmouth fans who grilled his belief in Sheffield Wednesday winning the League One title. He also feels this Saturday’s match will not change the race.

The Owls travel to Fratton Park at the weekend sitting atop the table on goal difference to Plymouth Argyle. But Portsmouth only rank 10th in the standings and are 10 points behind the play-off spots. Sheffield Wednesday are another 13 points clear of the south coast side.

Portsmouth went into the season expected to be among the teams fighting for promotion into the Championship. Yet Pompey sacked Danny Cowley in January with the club down in 12th place. John Mousinho has since overseen six wins over his 11 fixtures in charge so far.

Just Barnsley (23) have taken more points than Portsmouth (20) since Mousinho took over at Fratton Park. Shrewsbury Town have also claimed 20 points but from one fewer games. While Sheffield Wednesday have taken 19 points over seven matches in the same period.

Cowley oversaw a 3-3 draw when Portsmouth visited Sheffield Wednesday back in July on the opening day of the season. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru rescued a draw for the Owls in the 81st minute at Hillsborough. Pompey had twice come from behind to lead from the 64th minute.

Colton Palmer takes aim at Portsmouth fans over Sheffield Wednesday

Palmer now believes Sheffield Wednesday are proving their credentials as League One title winners and will finish above Portsmouth regardless of Saturday’s game. He has also taken aim at the Pompey fans who felt he underestimated them by backing the Owls for the title.

“All you Portsmouth fans who gave me a lot of stick at the start of the season for saying the Owls would win the league and I was underestimating Portsmouth, you seem to have gone quiet,” Palmer wrote on Twitter.

The former Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton midfielder added: “Whatever happens [on] Saturday, we will win the league and finish ahead of Portsmouth.”

Mousinho’s Pompey have one game in hand over Derby County for the last of the play-off paying positions. They also have two fixtures in hand over Bolton Wanderers in fifth place. But the south coast side will need results elsewhere to go their way in the promotion race.
