Sheffield United clinched promotion to the Premier League on Sunday afternoon – and they’ve received a surprise message from Sheffield Wednesday.
The Blades beat already-relegated Ipswich Town 2-0 on Saturday evening, as goals from Scott Hogan and Jack O’Connell has put the Blades on the verge of promotion.
Only two Leeds wins, a Blades defeat on the final day and a ridiculous goal swing could have stopped them, and with Leeds only drawing 1-1 with Aston Villa on Sunday, Chris Wilder and co could really start the party.
After a 12-year absence, the Blades are back in the Premier League, and they have been receiving plaudits from up and down the country after a superb season.
Sheffield Wednesday fans will have watched on begrudgingly as their bitter rivals won promotion, and have been incensed since the club released a surprise statement on Tuesday.
Club owner Dejphon Chansiri posted a statement on the club’s official website congratulating United on their promotion, believing it’s good for the city and it was a moment to recognise their accomplishment despite the rivalry.
Fans around the country have slammed the statement, believing the Owls should be detesting the idea of United in the Premier League again rather than congratulating them – but former Wednesday ace Carlton Palmer has offered his view.
Palmer believes the statement was a ‘touch of class’, believing it’s great for the city of Sheffield and everyone should be able to acknowledge the success of their rivals, whilst adding that it will be Wednesday’s turn to go up next season.
