Carlton Palmer comments on Sheffield Wednesday’s play-off chances.
Former Owls player and club legend, Carlton Palmer, says that Carlos Carvalhal must guide Sheffield Wednesday to promotion this season.
The 51-year-old has done a very good job with Wednesday since taking charge at the club in 2015. He is into his third season as Owls boss, and has already taken the club to successive top-six finishes in his previous two seasons.
Palmer, who has made over 200 appearances for the Hillsborough club across two spells, says that Carvalhal needs to deliver promotion this season, and the club should make a change if he fails to do so.
He said that last season’s play-off was the “minimum” people expected of Wednesday. He predicts his former club to be in the play-offs once again this season, but admits it will be considered as an under-achievement if they fail to do so.
Wednesday have made an unspectacular start to the 2017/18 campaign, but they are well within the reach of other potential challengers. The Owls currently lie in 12th position, but are only four points adrift of the play-off zone.
“I don’t believe Carlos deserves to be out of work but he’s in his third year and he has to deliver promotion this season,” said Palmer, as quoted by The Star. “If he doesn’t deliver promotion this year, then I think it will be time for them to make a change.”
“They are a good footballing side and have quality. [Barry] Bannan is a good player and [Steven] Fletcher and [Gary] Hooper are proven scorers. Kieran Lee was magnificent against Leeds. The Championship is a tough league but I think they will be in the play-offs again. If they don’t make the play-offs, they will have underachieved.”
