Leeds have got off to a flyer under new manager Marcelo Bielsa
Carlton Palmer has told Proper Sport that Stan Collymore is wrong to say burnout is a concern for Leeds United this season, as Marcelo Bielsa’s side continue to adopt a high tempo, pressing style of play.
Collymore claimed in The Mirror earlier this week, via Twitter, that Bielsa would be a miracle worker if he could get Leeds to play the way they have in their first three games throughout the entire season.
He said: “It will be very hard for them to maintain momentum, and the inevitable drop off in intensity is something to beware of. If Bielsa gets them through 46 league games, plus a few more cup matches at this level, he is a miracle worker.”
His comments have not gone down well with Leeds fans, and former Whites midfielder Palmer believes that Collymore is wrong to think that it is impossible to maintain such a style.
Palmer says that Wednesday’s promotion-winning side of 1990-91 played at a similar intensity, and believes the current Leeds style is similar to that of Burnley under Sean Dyche when they returned to the Premier League in 2015-16.
“I’ve read Stan Collymore’s comments about how it would be impossible for Leeds to continue that kind of tempo, and I disagree because I did the same at Sheffield Wednesday,” Palmer said.
“We played a high tempo game and yes we had a small hiccup. So if the players are fit, I think it could be a great season for Leeds United.
“I think burnout will slow Leeds down, but that’s the same for everyone. I believe the way they’re playing is the correct way to get out of the league – Burnley did it a couple of years ago.”
Leeds began the season with an excellent 3-1 win over Stoke City – many of whom consider favourites to gain promotion – thanks to goals from Mateuez Klich, Pablo Hernandez and Liam Cooper.
Klich got his name on the score sheet against Derby, as Leeds won 4-1 thanks to a Gjanni Alioski header and a brace from Kemar Roofe. Bielsa’s side continued their perfect start with a 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Bolton Wanderers.
The Whites will be looking to make it four out of four as they play host to Rotherham on Saturday at Elland Road.
