Pontus Jansson is an important player for Leeds United.

Pontus Jansson of Leeds United celebrates after the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road on February 25, 2017 in Leeds, England.

Carlton Palmer has criticised Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson on Proper Sport for his recent comments about his future.

The former Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds midfielder has stated that Jansson should have kept quiet.

The Sweden international defender recently hinted to Expressen that he will consider his future at Elland Road at the end of the season (click here to read more).

Jansson’s comments followed Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani’s criticism of the players on talkSPORT earlier this month for not giving enough.

Palmer has criticised the Swede, and has suggested that Leeds could look to sell him in the summer transfer window after the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.

“I think, to be fair, if I was him, I would have kept my mouth shut,” Palmer told Proper Sport about Jansson. “I think he is a decent player. He certainly hasn’t had a great season.

“He hasn’t covered himself in any glory, so if you are a Leeds United supporter and you are listening to him saying that – one of the highest-paid players at the club, just signed a new five-year contract, you would be disappointed.”

Palmer added: “Maybe Leeds United might be looking and saying, ’Well, if he has a decent World Cup, we can move him on. Maybe we will move you on’.”

Elland Road exit on the cards?

Jansson is not having a great season on a personal level, but there is no doubt that he is a very good defender.

It is hard to imagine Leeds selling the 27-year-old centre-back in the summer transfer window, although a good performance at the World Cup and subsequent big offers could change their mind.

What is clear, though, is that Jansson needs to step up his game and show the kind of form that made him hugely popular among the fans at Elland Road.
