Carlton Morris is enjoying a dream breakthrough season with Shrewsbury Town in League One – Norwich City will be watching.
If anyone expected Shrewsbury Town’s stunning start to the 2017/18 season to grind to a halt in unceremonious fashion, they will have been left stunned with League One’s surprise packages still flying high.
The Shrews, one of the favourites for relegation in pre-season, shot to the top of the third tier after an excellent start to the season which had the cynics choking on humble pie. And a series of one-goal victories gave way to a 4-0 battering of Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night – Paul Hurst’s side are only getting better.
As such, they are now two points clear at the top of League One. And much of the credit must go to Carlton Morris, the in-form striker who moved to the New Meadow in the summer on a season-long loan.
Morris notched his fourth goal in seven league starts and his fifth of the season overall against Bristol Rovers in midweek and, alongside former Barnsley striker Stefan Payne, looks to be one of the most inspired signings in the Football League this season.
Considering that the 21-year-old had struggled to make any sort of an impact during previous loan spells at Oxford United, York City and Rotherham, managing a combined one goal in 26 games, his ongoing purple patch in Shrewsbury colours is even more remarkable.
Morris only signed a new three-and-a-half year deal with Norwich at the start of the year – a decision that has now been vindicated as he shows signs of developing into a real attacking threat.
If he continues in this form, the 6ft 2ins striker will give himself every possible chance of fighting for a place at Carrow Road in the future.
