So Sheffield Wednesday did try to recruit winger after all, according to the Sheffield Star. It is claimed the Owls held discussions with Liverpool over a loan deal for Ryan Kent, who impressed on loan to Barnsley last season – scoring three goals and assisting as many in 44 appearances.
Wednesday were not alone in their interest, however, and Kent was ultimately loaned to Bundesliga side SC Freiburg, leaving Carlos Carvalhal’s side – who were also credited with interest in Southampton’s Josh Sims and Watford’s Isaac Success – empty handed.

The club’s failure to address their perceived need for pace out wide frustrated a significant number of Owls supporters throughout the summer, and many believe Kent would have been a shrewd addition.
Others, however, feel that loaning the Liverpool youngster would have been something of a pointless exercise, given how other wingers borrowed from the Premier League have fared at Hillsborough in recent seasons.
