Carlos Ulberg still doesn’t know how bad his injury from Saturday’s title fight is going to be.

The New Zealander pulled off one of the most unexpected knockouts of the year at UFC 327, overcoming what some doctors believe could be an ACL tear midway through the first round. Somehow, he managed to hit Jiri Prochazka with a left hook while standing on just one leg, but if reports are accurate, he could be out for up to a year.

Thankfully for Ulberg, who recently claimed the light-heavyweight title, there’s been no official diagnosis confirming a severe injury just yet. Unlike fellow winner Josh Hokit, who was rushed to hospital after his bout, Ulberg was able to stick around and take part in both the post-fight press conference and photos.

Carlos Ulberg is still awaiting confirmation of the full extent of his injury after UFC 327. He hasn’t had a scan yet but knows there’s a possibility it could be a torn ACL.

He explained: “It was just a freak accident. What happened was that I pushed off my leg and essentially it was just my knee that gave out and it caused a bit of vulnerability in the fight… We don’t know for sure.”

“We’re just waiting and I’ll get the scans done when I arrive in Vegas this week and we’ll know everything once that’s all done,” he continued. “I’ve never done the knee at all so I have no idea – it’s just swollen at the moment and it’s hard to get up so there’s definitely something going on there.”

“What is pain, eh? It’s swollen, it takes me a while now to get anywhere so I’m definitely walking like an old fella… It was just a freak accident, the knee felt like it was going in and out of the socket, it felt like a pain there and I couldn’t bear to put any weight on that leg.

“Any time I would push off the right foot or put any kind of weight on that leg and the pain I had to go through was unbearable.”
