Carlos Queiroz has confirmed he will take charge of Iran at this winter’s 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The 69-year-old, who was last in charge of Egypt, will be the manager of Iran for a third consecutive World Cup.
The former Real Madrid manager returns to the Iran fold a little more than two months before the start of the World Cup finals in Western Asia.

Queiroz, who also worked alongside Sir Alex Ferguson as the Scot’s assistant manager at Manchester United, replaces Dragan Skocic who led Iran through the Asia qualifying campaign.
The Portuguese coach led Iran at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

Iran are in Group B alongside England, Wales and USA, and Querioz’s side will face Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions in the opening game of the group which takes place on Monday, 21 November.
Queiroz, who has also had spells in charge of national sides Portugal and Colombia, confirmed that he’d be having a second stint in charge of Iran on Instagram.
Queiroz wrote: “When the family call you home, all you do is simply just show up. Fully committed to your duties and ready for the Mission.
“Lets do it together Lads! To the future! Thank you so much Team Melli.”

Queiroz led Iran to their best performance at a World Cup in Russia four years ago, Team Meli beat Morocco and drew with his native Portugal before narrowly missing out on a place in the last-16.
The showpiece at Qatar will be Queiroz’s fourth tournament as a manager at a World Cup, having led Portugal to the last-16 before being knocked out by eventual champions Spain in 2010.
Iran, who will be participating in their sixth World Cup, will be hoping to break new ground and progress beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.
