Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers spent big on Carlos Pena but failed to meet expectations.
Former Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha said this week that he could terminate Carlos Pena’s loan spell and send him back to Ibrox in the summer.
The 28-year-old has endured a horrific return to Mexican football after sealing a year-long loan move away from Rangers in January.
Having cost £2.7 million, Pena, who was signed by Caixinha last summer during the Portuguese’s stint with the Gers, must go down as a flop.
But his return might not be such a bad thing.
In terms of numbers, Pena didn’t flop at Rangers. He scored five goals from 14 starts for the club in all competitions which, for an attacking midfielder, is not a bad return. In fact, he has a better goal-to-game ratio than Celtic’s Stuart Armstrong.
He did, however, fail to reach the sort of expectations that you must accept when you cost a lot of money, but Pena’s return to Ibrox would see a reduction in expectation levels and maybe, just maybe, the lack of pressure could then see him rediscover his best form.
It might seem like a long shot, but if pressure to be a world beater hindered Pena in the first place then perhaps the knowledge that he has already been written off could give him the freedom to finally be a big player for the Gers.
