Pena has reportedly had his loan cancelled in Mexico and will return to Rangers.
Carlos Pena is reportedly set to return to Rangers in a surprise twist that sees his loan with Mexican side Necaxa end two months prematurely, but will it stunt another Gers star’s current development?
Mexican outlet Medio Tempo claim that Pena, 29, will return to Ibrox immediately after struggling to make an impact at Necaxa and indeed at Cruz Azul, where he was loaned to former boss Pedro Caixinha’s side in January.
Pena managed just 14 appearances for Rangers after joining the club for £2.2million, where the £20,000-a-week (Daily Record) man scored five goals before being ostracised by Graeme Murty and sent out on loan.
It remains to be seen if the 19-time Mexico international will have any impact under new manager Steven Gerrard, with the current Gers manager currently in Russia with his side as they are set to take on Spartak Moscow.
But if Pena does return and impresses at Ibrox, will that have a knock-on effect for current loanee Greg Docherty, who has been impressing with English League One side Shrewsbury Town?
Docherty, 22, has scored four goals and created another four from midfield for Shrewsbury since joining the club on a season-long loan from Rangers.
The former Hamilton star, who cost £650,000 in January (Daily Record) is a boyhood Rangers fan and has already expressed his desire to win back his place at Ibrox since leaving on loan.
But with Pena in the side, could Docherty fall down the pecking order even more? Time will tell, but surely if Pena does shine with the Light Blues and is given a chance by Gerrard, Docherty will find it even harder to forge a Rangers career.
