Rangers brought in one winger during the January window as Scott Wright arrived from Aberdeen, but they are likely to target another.

Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi and Kemar Roofe have all featured out wide, but with Jordan Jones and Brandon Barker expected to move on this summer, there could be an opening for a wide man.

A new name has been linked in recent days, with The Scottish Sun claiming that contact has been made over a deal for Morecambe talent Carlos Mendes Gomes.

The 22-year-old is far from a household name, but he’s been starring this season with 12 goals in League Two – and if Rangers fans don’t know much about him, they should take a look at his backstory.

Mendes Gomes was born in Senegal, but moved to Spain at a young age, joining up with the Atletico Madrid youth ranks as he looked to be on course for a big future.

The winger was then forced to move to England, as his father relocated his family in search of better education and opportunities for his kids – but that meant his football took a step back.

Mendes Gomes couldn’t find a team in his first year in England, and given his inability to speak the language, he ended up having to drop all the way down to non-league with West Didsbury and Chorlton – a semi-pro team based in Manchester.

That’s quite the bizarre move, but Mendes Gomes showed his quality and signed for Morecambe in 2018, where he has now thrived.

Mendes Gomes was praised by Manchester College coach Bill Prendergast in 2018, admitting that he ‘does things differently’ and is unlike anything he’s ever seen before.

There is often talk about the path less traveled in football, such as Jamie Vardy. In the case of Mendes Gomes, few go from Atletico Madrid to semi-pro football in Manchester and then on to Morecambe.

This unbelievable career could now take another stunning move if he joins Rangers, and few Gers signings in recent history have come with this kind of background.
