Huddersfield Town manager Carlos Corberan has told Thursday’s press conference – as per Leeds Live – that Marcelo Bielsa will always be someone he “references” in his managerial model. Corberan was linked with the job.

Bielsa, 66, was sacked last Sunday by Leeds after more than 150 games in charge – and nearly four years. More than he has managed in any other managerial role in his career. Jesse Marsch has replaced the Argentine.

The Telegraph reported that alongside Marsch, Huddersfield boss and ex-Leeds Under 23’s manager Corberan was being considered – as well as Ernesto Valverde. Marsch has signed a Leeds deal until June 2025.

Asked about Bielsa following his exit from Corberan’s old club, the Terriers gaffer spoke highly – and shows just how much he admires his old boss by underlining the amount he has learned from Bielsa behind the scenes.

“His methodology of training, is just different. Different from anyone in the world – it is exactly how he wants to play football. I am someone that likes to focus on training, the day by day stuff,” Corberan said, as per Leeds Live.

“Everything he did in training, or in a match, has the backing of many hours analysis. He is a manager that is ready to give his life for football, for a club, without any excuse. He will always be one of my references.”

Corberan on Bielsa: Shows how much Leeds legend was admired

Time after time, you hear just how much Bielsa was rated by his peers – or his fellow managers. Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino are two of the best managers in the world and they are renowned for being huge fans.

Bielsa had his critics. Too expansive, the man-to-man system often scrutinised – even though Leeds finished in ninth place in the Premier League last season. An easy deduction to make, of Bielsa.

But the truth is, having worked with him and not simply arrived with the Argentine – Corberan was working at Leeds before Bielsa arrived – that the Leeds icon leaves a lasting impression. Certainly, he has done on Corberan.
