Carlos Corberan confident Leeds’ Jay-Roy Grot will silence critics

Leeds United striker Jay-Roy Grot has dropped out of the first-team and featured for the under-23s.

Carlos Corberan has told LUTV that he is 100 per cent confident that Jay-Roy Grot is going to be a success after the Leeds summer signing put in a hugely impressive performance for the Whites’ under-23.

Grot has endured a fairly miserable time since arriving at Elland Road. He has had a number of critics after struggling to make an impact when he has been given a chance for Thomas Christiansen’s side, and many fans have been urging the Whites boss to take the teenager out of the firing line.

With a transfer or loan not possible this month – unless it was to return to NEC – dropping down into the under-23s seemed like a very smart idea, and he finally provided a true glimpse of his potential in the Whites’ clash with Huddersfield Town on Monday night.

Grot looked a handful for most of the evening, stepping up his performance in the second-half. He won a penalty after an excellent run – which was subsequently saved – and then scored the game’s only goal with a drilled effort shortly after.

And after the game, Corberan insisted that he fully expects Grot to win his doubters over in the future after the way that he has conducted himself recently.

“He came with us for the last two days and he showed that he’s ready to learn. He wants to show at Leeds United that he’s a Leeds United player and he’s a very ambitious guy,” he told LUTV.

“He’s a good player and a good finisher. He received the penalty, he scored one goal and that’s very positive for him because with his attitude I 100 per cent think he’s going to have good success at Leeds United.”

In fairness to Grot, he has had a difficult task with all of his first-team appearances in the Championship involving him come off the bench. But when he has started in the cup competitions, he has struggled to make any kind of positive impact.

But perhaps a spell in the under-23s may prove to be exactly what the Dutchman needs to get some confidence back, in case Christiansen needs to recall him to the first-team at any stage before the season’s conclusion.
