Tom Lees has not played for Sheffield Wednesday since January due a knee injury.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal
Carlos Carvalhal has suggested that he hopes that Tom Lees will be back training later this week as he pushes for a return to the Sheffield Wednesday side, according to the club’s official Twitter account.
Lees has not played since the Owls’ draw with Bristol City on the final day in January due to a knee problem (via Sheffield Star), and was again missing from the squad for their clash with Burton Albion on Tuesday.
But Carvalhal confirmed, as reported by the club’s Twitter account, that he expects to see the centre-back begin to push for a place in the team soon.
The news that the 26-year-old is closing in on a return will undoubtedly provide the squad with a major boost as they look to continue their push to secure a play-off spot in the Championship.
Sheffield Wednesday’s Tom Lees (R)
Wednesday are currently five points clear of seventh place Fulham, but the Cottagers can close that gap to just two should they win their game in hand, so having one of their most reliable performers back could be crucial.
In his absence, Vincent Sasso has endured a mixed run in the team, and with a tricky run of fixtures on the horizon – trips to Aston Villa and Barnsley, as well as home games against promotion chasers Reading and Newcastle are ahead in their next five – getting Lees back as quickly as possible could be extremely important to side’s chances of closing the door to the chasing pack.
