Carlos Carvalhal shares what he told Sheffield Wednesday’s players in post-Hull rallying cry

Sheffield Wednesday were robbed of a rare victory by a stoppage-time equaliser last time out.

Carlos Carvalhal has issued a rallying cry to his Sheffield Wednesday players in the aftermath of Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Hull City.

Wednesday fought back from a goal down to go 2-1 up with five minutes left at Hillsborough, but conceded an equaliser deep into stoppage time.

Hull’s goal robbed Wednesday of a first win in four matches, and left the promotion chasers eight points off the play-offs in 12th position.

The Owls travel to struggling Norwich in two days’ time and at his pre-game press conference on Thursday, Carvalhal shared the message he gave to his players this week.

“I’ve had an opportunity to talk with my players,” said the Portuguese via Wednesday’s official Facebook page. “I will tell you what I said exactly: This is Yorkshire. This is Sheffield. Sheffield is a city of workers, this is a city that the people work very hard to win the life, and the people want to recognise these values on the pitch.

“What we did in the second half [against Hull] is exactly what we want from Sheffield Wednesday since the beginning. It’s the heart, it’s the commitment, it’s the quality, it’s not being afraid of anybody. And I gave congratulations to my players about the second half, because this is the way, this is exactly what we want, this is the brand of our team.

“I know exactly what the Sheffield Wednesday fans want. They want to win of course, but they want to see a team run and fight and with a big commitment inside the pitch.”

Wednesday’s poor start has left Carvalhal under mounting pressure from large sections of the Owls’ fanbase.

However, the 52-year-old recently received the backing of chairman Dejphon Chansiri, who appointed him in 2015 and extended his contract in each of the past two summers.

Carvalhal went on to reiterate his belief that Wednesday, who have finished in the play-offs two seasons running, can still compete for promotion this campaign.
