Carlos Carvalhal has told the Sheffield Star that he is very pleased with the impact that Steven Fletcher has made at Sheffield Wednesday since signing during the summer transfer window.

Wednesday snapped Fletcher up on a free transfer, after Sunderland allowed his contract to expire.

The Scotland international has already made 10 appearances for Wednesday, and he scored the winner in the Yorkshire side’s last match against Blackburn Rovers.

And Carvalhal said: “It’s not easy to play in our team, I must tell you, because we have one year of work and we have quality.

“It’s not easy for a new player to come to play. Some players take more time, some players are more easy to come inside the team.

“Fletcher was very easy to come into the team and the way he plays and the way he does the teamwork to me is more important.

“It’s not the goals and assists. It’s important if he’s a team worker because we know our attackers are our first defenders, to make sure we have a strong team. If we have a strong team, we’ll score goals. He came very easily into the team.”

Fletcher had struggled for the last two seasons at Sunderland, but he seems to be finding his best form again at Wednesday.

The experienced forward has immediately settled into life at Hillsborough, and improved Carvalhal’s attacking options.

Wednesday actually made a slow start to the new campaign, but they are starting to click into gear now and have climbed up the table.

The Owls are currently in eighth place in the Championship, as they close in on a play off place.

Wednesday’s next fixture comes against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
