Sam Hutchinson has been a vital player for Sheffield Wednesday this season.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has told the Sheffield Star that he had to leave Sam Hutchinson out of his side’s squad to face Derby County because the midfielder had no energy.
Hutchinson was expected to make his return from injury at the iPro Stadium at the weekend.
However, the 26-year-old was not in Wednesday’s starting line-up, and he was missed in his absence.
The Owls could only pick up a 1-1 draw with Derby, but Carvalhal insists that the former Chelsea man’s omission was only down to his fitness levels.
“Sam was training and training very well but on Friday I spoke with him and he felt no energy,” Carvalhal said.
“His body has not completely stabilised but I think he will be near to come back to us.”
Hutchinson’s aggression has been key to Wednesday this season, with his performances in midfield catching the eye.
The versatile player has picked up 13 bookings in just 28 matches this term, but Carvalhal has never wanted to restrain his natural combative streak.
Hutchinson could now return for Wednesday just in time for their push for the play offs.
The Owls look set to finish in the top six, which will give them a chance at achieving promotion in Carvalhal’s first season in charge.
Wednesday need one win from their final two matches – against Cardiff City and Wolverhampton Wanderers – to guarantee a play off place.
