Almen Abdi has struggled to make an impact at Sheffield Wednesday since signing from Watford.
Carlos Carvalhal has told the Sheffield Telegraph that he will not give up on Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Almen Abdi, despite his poor start.
Abdi joined Wednesday from Watford and there were huge expectations on the Swiss midfielder.
However, the 30-year-old has failed to replicate the form which made him such a fans’ favourite at Watford.
Abdi has played seven times for Wednesday to date, but he has failed to impress.
Abdi has looked off the pace in most his appearances in the Owls’ first-team, and Carvalhal admits that he isn’t as fit as some of the other members of the squad.
“In the last three weeks, Abdi’s physical condition has come a little down so we decided to put him out of the QPR game,” the Portuguese boss said.
“Abdi is available to play, of course, but he didn’t do pre-season so he will do some specific work over the next few weeks.
“We will try to push him to bring him with a second life. That is our proposal and we believe that we will improve the player.
“We know Abdi has abilities and will perform at his best level in the future. We don’t give up.”
Abdi played a key role in helping Watford to promotion from the Championship back in the 2014/15 campaign, so the midfielder can rediscover his best form it will be a major boost for Wednesday.
The Owls’ next match comes against Derby County at the weekend, but it looks increasingly unlikely that Abdi will feature at the iPro Stadium.
