Sheffield Wednesday have been able to complete just one transfer so far this summer.

Carlos Carvalhal has confirmed to the Sheffield Star that Sheffield Wednesday had a deal all wrapped up, but the player turned them down.

Wednesday have been surprisingly inactive in the transfer window to date, as Carvalhal assesses his options.

The Portuguese boss insists he is having to be clever in the transfer market, due to financial restrictions.

And he was recently dealt a blow, as Wednesday missed out on an international player at the last moment.

“We were given the green light to sign the player but the player didn’t want to the play in the Championship,” Carvalhal said. “He plays for his national team and didn’t want to play in the Championship.”

The identity of the player that Wednesday missed out on is not yet clear.

The Owls have been linked to a range of targets, but have so far only been able to bring in George Boyd on a free transfer.

Wednesday will be hoping to have completed some more transfer before the time the competitive season starts up in August.

The Owls get their Championship campaign under way with a match against Preston North End.
