Sheffield Wednesday youngster George Hirst is one of the most exciting prospects breaking through at Hillsborough.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has admitted to the Sheffield Telegraph that he would have been worried if he had to start George Hirst.
Hirst has impressed at development squad level for Wednesday, but Carvalhal appears to feel that the youngster is not yet ready to make the step-up to the first-team.
And, after signing Jordan Rhodes on deadline day, Carvalhal is pleased to have bolstered his forward line.
“Usually, we put two attackers on the bench but at this moment we have [Steven] Fletcher out and Hooper is a doubt,” he said.
“If we hadn’t signed Jordan, we have three. I was worried three weeks ago that I must bring in George Hirst because I don’t have attackers. If you bring in a boy from the Under-18s to the first-team, it is because you have problems in attack.”
Hirst is regarded as the brightest prospect currently breaking through at Hillsborough, after a series of impressive performances for the development side.
However, it seems unlikely that the starlet will be able to break into the Owls’ first-team over the remainder of the season.
Wednesday have one of the most feared attacking line-ups in the Championship, following the arrival of Rhodes.
Hirst has played twice for Wednesday’s senior squad so far this season, with both his appearances coming as a substitute.
The Owls are next in action later this evening, when they take on Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.
