Carlos Alcaraz has reclaimed the world No. 1 in the ATP rankings following his Japan Open victory over Taylor Fritz.

Alcaraz got his revenge for his recent Laver Cup loss to Fritz, this time winning in straight sets.

The Spaniard made history by getting past Casper Ruud in the semifinals and came into this match as the clear favourite.

Alcaraz’s strong motivation led him to victory over Fritz, who sustained a leg injury in the second set.

Alcaraz showed why he is world number one, and there was never much doubt that he would come out on top in the tournament.

Fritz did not back down, but he will be frustrated that a leg injury limited his chances to really push the Spanish star.

After the Laver Cup win, the 27-year-old American felt confident heading into this match. But this time around, things just did not fall his way.

Alcaraz was respectful after the match and spoke highly of his opponent by saying: “First of all, I just want to start with Taylor. Such a great tennis player and athlete. It is always really tough playing against you.”

“Congrats on a great tournament to you and your team for doing a great job, just to be in the position you are.

“Congratulations on a great tournament and all the best for the rest of the season.”

Carlos Alcaraz comments on plans to return to Tokyo in 2025

Alcaraz appeared in the Japan Open for the first time and has suggested that it may not be his last.

When asked if he would play in next year’s Tokyo event, the Spaniard’s reply was met with a loud cheer from the full stadium.

He replied: “Hopefully I will see you soon, see you next year. We will see.

“I don’t want to leave you before saying how grateful I am for the support that I have received here in my first year coming to Tokyo.

“The fans have been amazing since the first day, so I want to say thank you very much.”

The ATP calendar can be demanding, and a lot can change over a season. But with a title now under his belt in Tokyo, there is every reason to believe Alcaraz will want to return if everything lines up right.
