Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has told The Liverpool Echo that Jordan Pickford will be back in the team to face Manchester United.

The Toffees headed to St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon to take on Newcastle United, and wanted to bounce back after defeat at Southampton.

However, Callum Wilson’s brace gave Newcastle a 2-1 win, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s late goal little more than a consolation.

Ancelotti made a huge decision before the game, as he decided to bench goalkeeper Pickford after a difficult few weeks.

Not only has Pickford’s form been a concern, but he has also been slammed in the media for his recent challenge on Virgil van Dijk.

Ancelotti took Pickford out of the firing line on Sunday, handing a Premier League debut to new signing Robin Olsen following his deadline day move from Roma.

The Swede performed well, commanding his area impressively whilst also making a fine save from Allan Saint-Maximin in the first half.

Ancelotti has now commented on the situation, suggesting that Olsen was ‘good’, but Pickford will definitely be back in the starting line-up to face Manchester United this coming weekend.

“The performance of Olsen was good, like usual,” said Ancelotti. “He’s a good goalkeeper, he’s a goalkeeper with experience. He was in good control of the game.”

“The reaction of Jordan was the reaction of a player who understands he was not going to play today, because I explained to him really clearly that I wanted to give an opportunity for Robin to play. He [Pickford] will be back for the Manchester United game,” he added.
