Manchester City once again showed exactly why they’re the favourites for the Premier League title as they beat Liverpool 4-1.

Pep Guardiola’s men hadn’t won a Premier League game at Anfield since way back in 2003, and fans would have been forgiven for fearing the worst when Ilkay Gundogan missed a first-half penalty.

Gundogan did put City in front, but Mohamed Salah brought Liverpool level, which seemed to spark City back into life again.

Gundogan scored from a Phil Foden pass, Raheem Sterling headed in Bernardo Silva’s dinked cross and Foden completed the scoring with a stunner.

Foden stole the headlines with that goal; his first touch was outstanding, he drove at Andrew Robertson with no fear, then shifted the ball onto his left foot and slammed past Alisson in virtually one motion.

The youngster is beginning to really fulfil his potential now, and his display against Liverpool resulted in major praise on Twitter.

Retired stars posted messages raving about Foden, with Guardiola’s former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol tweeting ‘what a great player’ about the midfielder.

The likes of Paul Robinson, Mario Melchiot, Stephanie Roche, Jermaine Beckford, Grant Holt, David James, Rio Ferdinand, Gary Lineker and ex-City hero Nigel de Jong were all blown away by the quality Foden’s goal too.

Further down the pyramid, Ipswich Town’s Luke Woolfenden, Barnsley’s Conor Chaplin, Sheffield Wednesday’s Josh Windass and Blackpool’s Luke Garbutt all heaped praise on Foden for his performance and his goal; Woolfenden calling Foden a ‘joke’ summed it up.

Away from football, Liam Gallagher called Foden ‘God’, with Alex Caruso of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga showing that Foden’s displays are also catching the eye stateside, with cricket star Sam Billings adding his own praise for the playmaker.
