Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, Sol Campbell has been speaking about Arsenal and their training ground, London Colney.
Campbell has been touring a few training grounds recently as he looks to educate himself ahead of his return to management, but interestingly, one place he hasn’t visited is London Colney.
One man who is often spotted at Colney is David Seaman. The former Gunner does his fair share of goalkeeping coaching at Arsenal these days, and he told Campbell about how much things have changed since their playing days.
Seaman spoke of the state of the art facilities and the new layout, and Campbell believes that Arsenal are risking cultivating an atmosphere that makes the players too comfortable.
What’s been said about Arsenal’s training ground?
Seaman can Campbell discussed London Colney’s renovations since their time at the club.
“There’s a whole new youth development block now. It’s really changed and it’s really good as well. There’s a lot more facilities and stuff,” Seaman said.
Campbell then shared his concerns.
“There is a limit. There’s a happy medium. You have to get the balance right. Don’t get me wrong, the pitches have to be brilliant and you don’t want any injuries, but is it too much? You can become too comfortable. You have to find a balance between a sparkly amazing training ground and a functional training ground that keeps people on their toes. There is a balance and it has to be right. If you’re not careful, players can become very comfortable very quickly and to get them out of that cycle can be a traumatic process,” Campbell said.

Got to stay grounded
Campbell knows what it takes to be a winner. After all, he was one of the invincibles, and he’s absolutely right in what he says.
Players need to be kept on their toes, whether that’s by their coaches or by the environment, and if Arsenal are making things too easy for their players, they could begin to let their standards slip.
Footballers can only reach the top by working incredibly hard, but in order to become the best of the best, they can’t afford to take their foot off of the gas for a single second.
