Sunderland should take a look at Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Lewis McGugan.

According to a report in the Sheffield Star, Cardiff City have taken Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Lewis McGugan on trial – but Sunderland should seriously consider hijacking a deal for the attacking midfielder.

Sunderland have a limited budget to spend this summer, but they are looking to add more players to their squad.

The Sunderland Echo claims that Simon Grayson is assessing his options in the transfer market, ahead of the new season, with bargain buys on his radar.

And Sunderland should consider McGugan, as they look to bolster their midfield.

McGugan did not play at all for Wednesday at all last season, and with only a year left on his contract at Hillsborough, he is unlikely to cost a big fee.

Indeed, Wednesday’s willingness to allow McGugan to leave on trial, shows how keen they are to get the midfielder off their books.

McGugan may have been deemed surplus to requirements at Hillsborough, but he remains a stand out talent at Championship level.

McGugan has proven to be a big attacking threat in the second tier over the course of his career, and he could be a handy addition for Sunderland.

At 28, McGugan still has plenty of time left in his career, and a move to Sunderland could be just what he needs to get back to his very best.
