Leeds took on Cardiff City hoping to spring a surprise, and did just that, winning their second game in a row.
Leeds United held out to secure a surprise away win over play-off chasers Cardiff City.
Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan, an analyst for BBC Radio Leeds, gave his post match verdict.
He said: “You look at every single player this evening, they’ve put a real shift in. It was a real hearty performance from the Leeds United team.
“We came here and we’ve done a job on them, that’s what it’s about. With two strikers scoring goals, what more could you ask for?”
Souleymane Doukara had given Leeds a lead at half-time with a goal which left Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall wrong footed and beat him at the near post.
Weekend hero Mirco Antenucci missed a simple chance to put Leeds 2-0 up midway through the second half, hitting a tame shot which was blocked by a Cardiff defender, with Marshall nowhere to be seen, but he made up for this miss by doubling their lead in injury time.
Cardiff had to play the final 25 minutes with 10 men after Brazilian defender Fabio da Silva was sent off after picking up a second booking. Lex Immers hit the post late on as Cardiff City pushed for an equaliser, and Marco Silvestri was forced into making a big save late on.
It was an improvement on Leeds United’s last away game eight days earlier which went disastrously, losing 4-0, with head coach Steve Evans instructed not to conduct press interviews after the heavy loss.
Evans had picked a tight midfield for this fixture with wingers Stuart Dallas, Mustapha Carayol and Jordan Botaka all left on the bench.
January signing Toumani Diagouraga was also rested, with Luke Murphy coming in, while Cardiff loanee Tom Adeyemi was ineligible.
