The Sunderland midfielder is out of contract this summer.
Sunderland’s Steven Pienaar in action
Cape Town City’s chairman has confirmed his side have made an approach for Sunderland midfielder Steven Pienaar, The Sun reports.
Pienaar is out of contract at the end of next month and The Telegraph reported last week he is among three players who are not in line for a new deal following Sunderland’s relegation to the Championship.
The South African has made 17 appearances for the Mackems this season, however, he turned 35 in March and is perhaps unlikely to find another Premier League side willing to take him on.
Yet one club who will not be deterred is Cape Town City, whose chairman John Comitis worked with Pienaar at the city’s other club, Ajax.
“Steven is a great player,” Comitis is quoted as saying by The Sun. “We are just waiting to see what he is going to do, and what is his decision.
Sunderland manager David Moyes has managed Pienaar at two different clubs
“We have a direct line [to him]. It is easy to talk to him. We don’t discard anyone. We are not a youth development team – we want to win silverware.
“If there is such a kind of player that we need to do that, we will consider him.”
The Telegraph reported that Pienaar’s fellow midfielder Jan Kirchhoff and defender Joleon Lescott will also be let go by Sunderland, with loan trio Adnan Januazaj, Jason Denayer and Javio Manquillo heading back to their parent clubs.

However, the newspaper added that John O’Shea and Victor Anichebe could both be offered extensions, alongside Sebastian Larsson.
