Jamie Carragher has been left very surprised after Gary Neville said he would put Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier into the England squad.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, which was broadcast on Sky Sports, Neville claimed that he would take Dier to the European Championships.

But Carragher favoured the likes of Conor Coady and Reece James to the Tottenham man.

And he was surprised that Neville included a player who cannot break into Tottenham’s team right now.

“I don’t think he’s done enough,” Carragher said. “He can’t get in the Tottenham team but he wants to put him in the England squad, I can’t work that one out.”

Dier is clearly a player who Gareth Southgate trusts, and he usually does make England’s squads.

However, there simply has to be question marks over whether the £4 million signing (BBC Sport) will be selected in the summer.

Jose Mourinho kept faith in Dier for a long time this season, but the Tottenham man now seems to have lost his place.

Mourinho has opted to play Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon together more recently, although that partnership may now be changed, after Spurs struggled in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle United at the weekend.
