It’s been a long and hard season for Liverpool without the influence of Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk picked up a knee injury in Liverpool’s draw with Everton back in October and hasn’t been seen since.

By virtue of the fact that Jurgen Klopp’s side – who were defending Premier League champions at the start of the season – are sixth in the table and struggling for a Champions League place, you could argue that the big Netherlands international has been sorely missed.

Van Dijk posted a nostalgic message on Instagram.

This time two years ago, the 29-year-old was picking up his PFA Player of the Year award following a brilliant first full season at Anfield, helping Liverpool to a second-placed Premier League finish – by a single point – and later a sixth Champions League title.

Those were better days for fans of the Merseyside club and here’s how some of them reacted to Van Dijk’s photo:

When will Virgil van Dijk be fit for Liverpool?

Quite honestly, the big man is unlikely to play for Liverpool again this season.

He was originally ruled out for the rest of the campaign but his promising Instagram updates prompted suggestion that he was ahead of schedule.

But with Liverpool only competing for a top-four finish, it’s an unnecessary risk by Klopp and the club’s medical staff to rush him back.

But Juventus powerhouse Matthijs de Ligt delivered a promising update in March [Goal], claiming that his fellow Dutchman ‘looked very good’ and ‘seemed very fresh’.

Netherlands coach Frank de Boer said earlier this year that he would be picking Van Dijk for Euro 2020 if he was deemed fit enough in a revelation which didn’t go down well with Liverpool fans.

Ideally, the Reds supporters – and Klopp – will want the defender fighting at 100 percent fitness for the start of next season as they go in search of reclaiming the title that they surrendered so easily this time around.
