Paul Robinson called West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, ‘FlappyHandsSki’, when discussing Arsenal’s options between the sticks over the years to Stadium Astro on YouTube – prompting reaction from Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink.

Fabianski, 37, remains first choice at West Ham. Having joined the Hammers from Swansea back in 2018, he has gone on to play 154 times for the London club in all competitions. It comes after seven years at The Emirates, with Arsenal.

During that time, the 57-time Poland man only managed 78 appearances for the Gunners. Indeed, he was very much a back-up goalkeeper having joined the club from Legia Warsaw. He has since made a career in the Premier League.

He continues to keep France’s World Cup goalkeeper Alphonse Areola on the bench at the London Stadium. But, he is out of contract at the end of the season. Robinson was discussing Arsenal’s goalkeeping options over the past decade.

Robinson, an ex-Tottenham goalkeeper, named Fabianski as ‘FlappyHandsSki’, a nickname the Polish stopper was given during his inconsistent form at Arsenal – one that has stuck with him since. Hasselbaink was in shock.

“They’ve had a lot of goalkeepers go through there over the years. After Seaman, then Lehmann – a lot of goalkeepers. Szczesny, FlappyHandsSki, that’s my nickname for him,” Robinson said. Hasselbaink replied: “You can’t say that!”

While his form at Arsenal was somewhat inconsistent, he has since embarked on a long and impressive career in the Premier League. Indeed, he has 87 clean sheets in 334 Premier League matches. A very respectable tally.

Robinson should be a bit more respectful. Indeed, the ex-Tottenham, Leeds and England goalkeeper only managed 88 clean sheets in the Premier League himself – playing 41 more games in England’s top tier. Fabianski will overtake that.

Every goalkeeper has made mistakes in the past, and of course, Fabianski’s nickname is well-renowned. But, the stats do not lie – he has a better ratio of clean sheets in the Premier League, and will surpass Robinson’s record soon.
