Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has taken a dig at Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp’s side joined Manchester United in entering talks over a new European Premier League.

The TalkSPORT pundit wrote: ‘Villa beat Liverpool 7-2 now they want to move leagues. Can’t make this stuff up.’

The Reds could join the division alongside the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, and it has already been backed by FIFA with £4.6 billion in funding made available according to Sky News.

It is claimed in the report that 12 of the top clubs from England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain are currently in negotiations over the formation of the new tournament, which could begin as early as 2022.

This idea reeks of football’s powerhouse clubs trying to break down the traditional league structure, and Agbonlahor is right to ridicule such a proposal.

One would presume that no Liverpool supporter wants to see their team going up against the same old European heavyweight over and over again – it would surely become boring after a while.

After all, isn’t that what the Champions League is for anyway?

Football is built on beating the odds, a variety of different opponents and inspirational underdog stories.

For that reason, it feels like this European Premier League is a terrible idea.
