Rangers prepared for the derby with a 2-0 win over St Mirren
Steven Gerrard has paid tribute to Alfredo Morelos after the striker ended his goalscoring drought.
The Rangers striker had failed to find the net in league action since September’s 2-2 draw against Hibs, but showed composure to score his side’s second in the 2-0 win over St Mirren in Paisley on Wednesday afternoon.
Morelos was given a starting berth at the expense of Ryan Kent, and has given his manager plenty to think about ahead of Saturday’s crucial derby against Celtic at Ibrox.
As quoted by Radio Clyde, Gerrard said: “Alfredo will be delighted with the goal.
“He has been training well and I had a good feeling it was about to come.
“He’s getting into some good places. He was unlucky against St Johnstone last week and unlucky against Hibs on Saturday when he came on.
“So I had a feeling it was only a matter of time. You can’t keep him down forever.
That will do his confidence the world of good.”
Rangers had gone 1-0 up six minutes prior to Morelos’ strike thanks to Kemar Roofe.
That result means the league leaders go into Saturday’s match with a 16-point gap over their rivals, who secured a 3-0 victory at Celtic Park against Dundee United.
Gerrard confirmed that Rangers will go into that match without midfielders Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack, with the former awaiting the results of a second scan following an injury sustained in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Hibs.
