Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, David Seaman has been discussing Granit Xhaka and his ever-changing role at Arsenal.
The Swiss international is at his best when he’s deployed in the centre of midfield, but in recent weeks, he’s been utilised in the defence at times, and that’s something that Seaman simply can’t get his head around.
Indeed, Seaman says that Xhaka has been really consistent as of late, but he doesn’t understand why his position has been changing as of late.
What’s been said?
Seaman spoke about how Arteta has been utilising Xhaka in recent weeks.
“Xhaka has been really consistent, but I’ve seen him playing on the left side, at left-back or on the left of a back three, and I just can’t get my head around that,” Seaman said.

Had to be done
Seaman says that he can’t understand why Xhaka has been played in different roles, but in a way, we can sympathise with Mikel Arteta’s decisions.
Arsenal are in the midst of a bit of a crisis at the back. Takehiro Tomiyasu is out of action, Kieran Tierney is injured and Nuno Tavares has proven time and time again to be defensively suspect.
Therefore, moving Xhaka either deeper or wider makes sense as he’s a trusted, experienced player who is more than capable of playing in these roles.
Of course, playing Xhaka out of position isn’t ideal, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
