Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after seeing a photo of Thiago Alcântara and Nathaniel Phillips embracing against Tottenham yesterday.
While there’s nothing that stands out about the photo, a number of supporters have been chatting about it purely due to how unlikely such a link-up would’ve seemed last season.
How do we mean?
Well, Thiago was busy starring for the champions of Europe, hoovering up a treble as Bayern Munich also won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.
The Spain international made 40 appearances in all competitions, and cemented his status as one of Europe’s best midfielders.
In stark, stark contrast, Phillips was playing in the division below Thiago, making 19 appearances while on loan at Stuttgart before Liverpool recalled him.
Now, the Reds duo – who experienced very different campaigns last term – are now equals, playing for the Premier League champions.
If you were to have told Phillips he would be starring alongside a player like Thiago, as well as the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, he probably would’ve laughed in your face.
Having said that, the 23-year-old hasn’t let Jurgen Klopp down when called upon, despite a lack of top-level experience.
