‘Can’t believe’: Merson shocked Everton were able to sign £4.5m-rated player

Paul Merson has admitted that he is relatively shocked as to how Everton could sign Conor Coady from Wolverhampton Wanderers this past summer.

Coady, who began his career at Liverpool, returned to Merseyside to join the Toffees on a season-long loan.

According to The Telegraph, Everton can make the deal a permanent one for only £4.5 million.

The England international had been one of Wolves’ most important players for a number of years in the Premier League.

And Merson, speaking to Sportskeeda, has admitted he is stunned as to why the Molineux outfit allowed him leave.

He said: “If I’m being honest, I can’t believe they let someone like Conor Coady leave. He was the heart and soul of the team and marshaled their backline expertly since they gained promotion to the Premier League, so it just feels like a strange one.”

The 29-year-old was indeed a massive player for Wolves.

We know that because since leaving Wanderers, they’ve only won one of their first eight Premier League outings, resulting in the club being 18th in the standings and sacking Bruno Lage, their manager.

You can’t underestimate what a massive influence Coady was and Merson is spot on, letting him go – particularly on loan – was a bizarre decision and one that could ultimately cost them their top-flight status.
