Ally McCoist has blasted Rangers substitute Scott Wright during commentary on BT Sport for failing to cross the ball against PSV Eindhoven, during injury-time on Tuesday night as the two sides played out an enthralling 2-2 draw.

Wright, 25, came off the bench to play the last 20 minutes of Tuesday night’s Champions League play-off first leg at Ibrox. Ibrahim Sangare’s opener was cancelled out by Antonio Colak, before Tom Lawrence gave Rangers the lead.

However, Rangers failed to deal with a corner and Armando Obispo made it 2-2 on 78 minutes. In injury time, Rangers were pressing to create a final chance and Wright picked the ball up on the right, after a lay-off from James Tavernier.

Colak and other Rangers players were waiting in the penalty area. But Wright, making his 55th appearance for Rangers, decided to try a pass inside instead of swinging the ball into the box and McCoist could not help but criticise him.

“I cannot believe he doesn’t deliver it, cannot believe he doesn’t deliver it. He’s got half a yard. Just put it in the box. Let your centre-forward attack it,” McCoist snapped, during commentary on BT Sport of the first leg.

Is Wright good enough for Rangers? Joining the club in January 2021, he has played 55 times over the last 18 months. But he has only managed 13 goal involvements. Giovanni van Bronckhorst seems to like the uncapped Scotsman.

But ultimately, eight goals and five assists in 55 games is not enough. His decision making in the final third should really have improved by now. The Gers have brought in Lawrence, Rabbi Matondo and Malik Tillman.

It means his game time is sure to go down. His decision making is sure to have annoyed van Bronckhorst as well as McCoist. He remains a squad player but he seems he has hit his ceiling. Next summer, a decision may have to be made.
