When you are reaching goalscoring records set by Newcastle great, Alan Shearer, then you are doing something right and one of Arsenal’s rising stars falls into that category.
On Wednesday evening, Joe Willock scored for the sixth consecutive Premier League game for Newcastle as they saw past already-relegated Sheffield United last night.
The Arsenal loanee has matched Shearer in scoring for six games on the bounce and he can make it seven this Sunday, on the final day of the campaign, as Newcastle face off against another already-relegated team in Fulham.
Newcastle supporters have seemingly been provided with a much-needed ray of light with Willock’s performance in the North East since that January switch.
And with the attack-minded midfielder set to return to Arsenal in the summer, those at St James’ Park would like their club to get the cheque book out so they can snap him up on a permanent basis or on loan again.
Newcastle fans are pretty clear about what they think about Willock and some are baffled as to why Mikel Arteta didn’t think he was better than what he already has at his disposal in North London.
Given Arsenal’s pretty abject season and struggling midfielder, which has lacked goals, then it’s pretty logical to think that Willock should fit straight in next term.
And that doesn’t help the cause of the Newcastle faithful, who think Willock is a player they can build their team around.
Arsenal’s academy is proving to show its might amongst their struggles this season, with Bukayo Saka an England international, Emile Smith Rowe showcasing his ball-carrying ability and Willock channelling his inner-Frank Lampard.
Either way, there is some serious talent and quick-thinking poaching ability in Willock’s body, who will have a decision to make once the final ball has been kicked for this COVID-hit 2020/21 campaign.
Nonetheless, here is a selection of Newcastle fans reacting to Willock’s performance from last night:
