Ligue 1 giants and Champions League chasers Marseille want Tyler Roberts from West Bromwich Albion – but so do Wolves.
There aren’t too many sides in the history of the Championship who could lure the likes of Ruben Neves or Diego Jota – let alone pay almost £30 million combined for the Iberian duo.
Wolves, however, are no ordinary second tier club thanks to the financial muscle provided by Chinese investors Fosun International and the contacts of their close aid, the super-agent Jorge Mendes.
But while a deal to bring in young striker Tyler Roberts from West Brom would be much more low-profile, and very cheap by comparison, a transfer would once again highlight just how enticing a destination Molineux has become.
The Times claimed a month ago that the 18-year-old was being lined up by Wolves with his contract at Midland rivals West Brom set to end in the summer. Roberts, a Wales youth international who has impressed on loan at Walsall, wouldn’t be Wolves biggest summer signing but his arrival would provide another statement of just how far this club has come.
Particularly with The Mail claiming that French giants Marseille are also interested. Marseille are joint-second with Lyon and Monaco in the Ligue 1 table and appear to be on track for a return to the Champions League this season.
And with American investor Frank McCourt holding grand ambitions, Marseille can boast one of the most exciting projects in European football with young talents like Roberts at their core.
In most other circumstances, you wouldn’t give a Championship club much hope going up against a giant like Marseille. But, as we said before, Wolves are no ordinary second tier club.
