Tottenham star should look at how Olivier Giroud has become an important first team player at Arsenal.
Tottenham’s Vincent Janssen
There is no escaping from Vincent Janssen’s struggles at Tottenham this season, with his lack of impact reflecting badly on everybody.
Janssen himself has failed, with no goals from open play, and questions are also being asked of the club’s recruitment, and Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to only give him brief five minute substitute appearances over the past month.
The striker is clearly struggling for confidence, but he should not give up hope of making an impact.
One example of a player Janssen should model his game on if he is to be successful in the Premier League is at their North London rivals Arsenal.
Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud celebrates scoring their third goal
Olivier Giroud had a similarly poor start at Arsenal when he signed in 2012, dealing with the added pressure of attempting to replace Robin van Persie.
Like Giroud, Janssen has little pace, and is well built physically. The Arsenal ace has used this to his advantage, being a threat in the air and offering the Gunners a ‘plan B’ which they had lacked for years.
Five years on from arriving at The Emirates, Giroud is closing in on 100 goals for the club, currently sitting on 93.
It hasn’t always been pretty, but Giroud has become an effective threat for Arsenal at times, and has shown himself capable on occasion of the sublime.
Janssen needs to dig deep, and play to his strengths. He needs more chances from Mauricio Pochettino, but he must also do more with them.
It is fair to say he could struggle to ever replicate what Harry Kane is doing, but if he can be an impact player like Giroud often is at Arsenal and carve out a role for himself between now and May, he might just avoid being sold on after just one season.
