Newcastle United have found it difficult to find the net this season but one of the club’s loanees has been amongst the goals of late.

Ivan Toney is spending the season with Wigan Athletic in League One and has produced some impressive displays.

In midweek Toney found the net as Wigan prevailed past AFC Fylde in their FA Cup second round replay, while he was also on target after entering the fray as a substitute in the league fixture against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

The forward has been restricted to just four senior appearances since he joined Newcastle from Northampton Town in 2015, and has spent much of the ensuing period out on loan, taking in spells at Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town and Scunthorpe United.

At the age of 21, Toney is approaching the stage in his development where a concrete decision will have to be made over his long term future.

Although he hasn’t performed consistently for Wigan this season, the youngster has shown flashes of what he is capable of, and, buoyed by his recent exploits, will now hope to make a major impact for his temporary side in the second half of the season.

So far this season Toney has scored six goals in 23 games across all competitions, and he will now be seeking to add to that tally.

Toney still has a lot to prove as he aims to make the breakthrough at Newcastle but should he start to score with greater regularity then he deserves an opportunity to challenge for a place in the first-team squad next season.
