The Southampton defender has joined Fulham on loan.
Matt Targett has spent his entire career to date at Southampton but the defender will get an indication of what is like playing elsewhere after joining Fulham on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
The left-back has made 42 appearances for Southampton in total, but just two of them have come this season and he has mainly been playing for the club’s U23 side.
At the age of 22, Targett is now at the stage of his development where he needs to be playing regular first-team football and his spell with Fulham will hopefully enable him to do that.
Targett has demonstrated that he is capable of performing impressively in the Premier League but he now needs to show that he can be relied upon by Fulham as a player that can deliver consistent displays.
Fulham, who are currently in seventh place in the Championship, are eager to secure a place in the play-offs, and Targett will be determined to help them fulfil that objective.
In the long-term, however, establishing himself at Southampton will prove problematic so long as England international Ryan Bertrand is at the club.
If Bertrand was to depart then there may well be an opportunity for Targett to feature frequently but at the moment his chances are likely to be limited for the foreseeable future and he may eventually have to consider departing Southampton on a permanent basis.
