David Thompson has heralded Xherdan Shaqiri’s performance for Liverpool in midweek – but believes that he could be leaving Anfield soon.

The Swiss star has barely featured for Liverpool in the Premier League this calendar year, making one appearance in that competition since January.

But Shaqiri, a £13 million addition in 2018, dusted off the cobwebs and produced a fine performance as the Reds thumped Lincoln City 7-2 in the League Cup on Thursday night.

The former Bayern Munich and Stoke City star, who hadn’t started under Jurgen Klopp since December, opened the scoring with a stunning free kick early on and looked a constant threat from midfield – and dead-ball situation – all night long.

Klopp sang his praises after the game and now Thompson has joined in, though he can’t see the 28-year-old remaining on Merseyside for long.

Shaqiri, who earns £80,000 per week with Liverpool, clearly has talent.

But the reality is that if an offer comes in, he should definitely leave. Klopp and Michael Edwards have signed both Takumi Minamino and Diogo Jota this year, two players who could certainly cause the Swiss attacker to play even less.

Plus, injuries have been unkind to him down the years, so he more than likely wants regular football and there’s no chance of getting it under the German right now.
