Celtic have been linked with Jon Flanagan following his Liverpool release and if anyone can reinvent his career then Brendan Rodgers can.
Liverpool have announced that Jon Flanagan is one of ten players being released by the club this summer when his contract expires.
Flanagan progressed from the club’s academy but has played just nine first team matches for the Reds since Jurgen Klopp was appointed manager in October 2015.
During that time the defender has also had loan spells at Burnley and Bolton Wanderers but will now be seeking only the second permanent club of his career.
The Sunday Post reports that both Celtic and Rangers are interested in the 25-year-old, with both of their managers having links with the England international – Brendan Rodgers was his boss at Anfield while Steven Gerrard played alongside him.
Rodgers revival
Playing under the Northern Irishman at Parkhead is sure to appeal to Flanagan as the full-back enjoyed his best season to date when working with the 45-year-old.
That came in 2013/14, when the Merseysiders missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City by just two points and the Englishman made 23 top flight appearances that term.
Initially not involved, Flanagan broke into the starting XI in the November and became a mainstay at right and left-back for the remainder of the campaign – earning his one and only cap to date for the Three Lions at the end of that season as a result.
He may have had problems on and off the pitch since, but if anyone can reinvent this player’s career then Rodgers can.
