Reece Oxford has been linked with a permanent move to Borussia Monchengladbach but should West Ham give him another chance?
Freiburg’s forward Nils Petersen and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Reece Oxford (R) vie for the ball during the German first division Bundesliga football match.
This is despite the fact that Oxford has played just twice for the Bundesliga side since completing a season-long loan switch there over the summer.
David Moyes, manager of West Ham United, looks on prior to the Premier League match against Chelsea.
Up until last night (December 12) the defender had managed only one minute of game time for Gladbach since departing East London, but the 18-year-old played the full 90 minutes on Tuesday night in a 1-0 defeat to Freiburg in the German top tier.
A lack of minutes on the pitch was going to see Oxford’s loan ended early in the New Year and him return to the Hammers, but if a deal is put forward then manager David Moyes will not stand in his way – even though the Scot has not seen him play since taking charge at the London Stadium.
It is not as if Moyes has a huge amount of options in the England Under-20 international’s preferred position of central defence, however, with usual left-back Aaron Cresswell having filled in there in recent times.
Aaron Cresswell of West Ham United is shown a yellow card by referee Anthony Taylor during the Premier League match against Chelsea.
This is because James Collins has spent much of the season injured (and the 34-year-old is out of contract next summer), while the future of Jose Fonte at the club has been cast into doubt after comments from co-owner David Sullivan in the Guardian claiming his children “begged” him not to sign the Portugal international in January.
Oxford was once considered one of the brightest young talents in English football and with options in his position limited currently for Moyes, surely selling him would be madness before the 54-year-old has even given him a chance?
