Sheffield United are hoping to add two Premier League strikers. Should Nottingham Forest try to muscle in?

Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka

Nottingham Forest should be preparing for a crucial January transfer window in which just one or two signings could make a huge difference to their promotion chances.

The Whites are among the Championship’s best teams so far, currently sitting just three points off the top of the table.

This year’s promotion race looks like the tightest for several years. This means teams will be going all out to gain an edge in the transfer window to attempt to pull away.

The Sheffield Star report Sheffield United are lining up potential moves for one of either Southampton’s Shane Long or Bournemouth’s Jermain Defoe.

The Blades (fourth) are just three points ahead of Forest in seventh – instead of allowing them to gain another advantage, should Aitor Karanka’s side try to muscle in?

Forest’s current options – do they fit?

There’s no doubt that Forest’s frenetic transfer business over the past 12 months has caused some problems as well as solutions.

This window they need to be more methodical and choose their options carefully.

That said, only one Forest player is in double figures this season, Lewis Grabban with 10 goals, and the nearest teammate is Joe Lolley with five.

Jermain Defoe and Shane Long have both past the peak of their careers, and could do with a step down to Championship level.

A loan deal for one of them would give Forest better options and give them help in case Grabban gets injured.

With the prospect of Sheffield United adding one of them, it raises the stakes for Forest to consider making a move of their own.
