Despite Massimo Luongo’s lack of game time at the World Cup in Russia, the Queens Park Rangers midfielder can go a long way to convincing fellow countryman Trent Sainsbury his immediate future lies in west London.
The Australian duo endured mixed emotions during the Socceroos group stage exit, with Luongo failing to get on the pitch – and Sainsbury considered to be the standout performer in defence.
According to the Sun on Sunday (24/6, pg 60) Championship rivals Aston Villa were reported to be interested in a move for Sainsbury but nothing has since materialised.
Luongo and Sainsbury made their international debuts four years ago and the pair are considered to be friends off the pitch. With QPR still seeking new defensive recruits, Sainsbury could fit the bill for Steve McClaren’s side.
Sainsbury, 26, is valued at £1million (TransferMarkt), and his contract expires in December – so even on QPR’s strict budget, a deal would be possible.
QPR have already lost three defenders this window, with Toni Leistner the only new addition to date and it’s likely the pair would fill the centre-half roles if Sainsbury did rock up at Loftus Road.
